sqlmaint.exe failed when using xp_sqlmaint

Microsoft SQL Server

First step is to specify a report file for sqlmaint.exe and see what error messages SQL Server returns.
Thanks for your response Tibor.
I have tried specifying -Rpt "C:\crud.txt" and NOTHING
happens. I get No report file, and the same error
message comes up in QA, with the following in the Output
grid:
NULL
Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility (Unicode), Version
8.00.760

Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation, 1995-
1998

It seems to be a permissions issue for xp_sqlmaint, but
I can't for the life of me figure out how to diagnose or
correct that. I added an NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM login to
the database, and assigned it to the sysadmin role but
that didn't help either.
Any more ideas??

Strange... I'm out of ideas, I'm afraid. Perhaps MS Support next?

You can create a maint plan to see if the jobs it creates behaves the same. Just in case the xp gets confused
by some option you specify.

Btw, is there a reason for using xp_sqlmaint, instead of having a CmdExec job calling sqlmaint.exe directly?
