2000 to 2005

Microsoft SQL Server

Hello. I am currently using SQL 2000 for developmet for several clients. I
have a new client who wishes to use SQL 2005. My questions concern the
versatility of SQL 2005.
1. If I installed SQL2005 developers edition will I still be able to connect
under Enterprise manager to SQL 2000 databases ?
2. If I create a database and SQL 2005 can i save it (back up) the database
so that clients still running SQL 2000 can load that database in their
system?
3. is it possible to run both versions (2005 and 2000)on one machine?

Thank you ,

Steve
1. You can use 2005 Management Studio to manage both 2000 and 2005.
You can't use 2000 Enterprise Manager to manage 2005.
2. No.
3. Yes.

Note that you may need separate branches of code if you support
clients running the same code base under 2000 and 2005. In principle
it's perfectly possible to write backwards-compatible code in 2005 but
when you move your existing 2000 code to 2005 you will find there are
a few breaking changes, some documented and some not so well
documented. You should always test on the target platform in every
case of course :-).
